Discover Dublin’s coastline, one stop at a time
Beyond Dublin’s city centre lies a beautiful stretch of coastline dotted with seaside villages, historic harbours, beaches and spectacular views across Dublin Bay. With the DART providing an easy connection along the coast, exploring south Dublin makes for a wonderful day out during your stay at InterContinental Dublin.
From nearby Sandymount, follow the coastline south and discover some of Dublin’s most distinctive neighbourhoods at your own pace.
Start in Sandymount
Begin your coastal adventure close to the hotel with a stroll through Sandymount and along Sandymount Strand. The expansive shoreline offers views across Dublin Bay towards Poolbeg Lighthouse and the Great South Wall, while the village itself is home to cafés, restaurants and local shops.
Sandymount also has strong literary connections, making it an ideal starting point for combining a coastal walk with an exploration of James Joyce’s Dublin.
Stop at Dún Laoghaire
Continue south by DART to Dún Laoghaire, a historic seaside town centred around its impressive harbour. Walk along the East or West Pier, watch the boats on the water or stop for coffee or something sweet before continuing your journey.
Explore Sandycove
A short journey further brings you to Sandycove & Glasthule. Visit the James Joyce Tower & Museum at Sandycove Point, explore the surrounding coastline or take in the atmosphere at the Forty Foot, one of Dublin’s best-known swimming spots.
The James Joyce Tower is easily reached from Sandycove & Glasthule DART station, with a walk of approximately ten minutes to the Tower.
Discover Dalkey
Continue along the coast to Dalkey, a charming village known for its historic character, independent shops, cafés and restaurants. Take time to explore the village before continuing towards Killiney.
Finish in Killiney
End your coastal journey in Killiney, where the views across Dublin Bay become particularly spectacular. For panoramic views, explore Killiney Hill Park and make your way towards the Obelisk, overlooking the coastline towards Bray Head.
